My Review

“Cowboy Under the Mistletoe” by Linda Goodnight is the first book of her new series 'The Buchanons' and woo doggie it is a dozy of a first book filled with stubbornness and more heartache than a Christmas story should have.

I have to say that at times the book seemed to move pretty slowly but I almost think that maybe this book is setting up for some pretty big stories to come in the series. With that thought in mind I continued on with the story even though it did seem too slow at times. When I finished the book, I was in tears, both sorrow and happiness, to where now I can't wait for the future books. So if anyone reading the book wonders if it is worth it, I would say in my personal opinion it most certainly is worth the time it takes to read it until the end.

We are introduced to the Buchanon family here and what they do for a living plus a little of the pain that has happened in the past, now that is a story that I can't wait for it to come out with the other party. So there is Charity, Quinn, Sawyer, Dawson, Brady, Jayla and Allison, with Charity the only married sibling so I am hoping that we get to see all the rest of them with their stories as the series progresses, or if we don't see each story, we get to watch them fall in love through their siblings eyes.

Allison is compared to Pollyanna several times in the book but I don’t think that is all that great of a comparison for to me it seemed like she saw the good in everything and trusted God to take care of everything else. Pollyanna would have been open about all the things that Allison wasn't completely open about, but I completely understand Allison as to why she kept things to herself. Here her heart is so easy to see, not just because we see her point of view, but there is just something about her that makes it easy to see that her heart is huge, but she is not a push over either. She has spunk and a bit of a cowardice within her, but then again don't we all.

Jake is a man who is completely different than the teenager that he was, for life has changed him in numerous ways. There is a bit of a struggle that Jake is going through with some new changes in his life, but finally things become clear for him with one of those struggles, while another is something he doesn't see how to do anything about it except for one thing that he really doesn't want to do. Jake is a man who puts other peoples feelings ahead of his own, with the feeling that it is what he deserves. Jake shows how responsible he is and where his priorities are as well.

Though Christmas Day is not the main focus of this story, the season plays a big part in a subtle way. The message of forgiveness is such a big part of the season, and this is a great book that shows how people are affected when it is withheld and given freely. Planks were removed from eyes, olive branches extended and over all joy was there at the end of the book, as it should.

This really is a wonderful book to read for the holidays, but man is it going to be tough waiting for the next book that is for sure. I hope that all who read this book enjoys it like I did.

My Review

“An Amish Family Christmas” by Marta Perry and Patricia Davids is one book with two novella's which both have some pretty special Christmas messages.

The “Heart of Christmas” by Marta Perry is a lovely story of forgiveness and patience. Oh things get interesting right before Christmas when Toby comes back to town and enrolls his two little ones into Susannah's school, for this is the time where things get turn upside down for Susannah.  Things are turned upside down between Toby, his children and other issues popping up in a matter of days and there is not a whole lot that Susannah can do about it.
Things in this novella do move very quickly, however, with all the history that is explained throughout this novella between Toby and Susannah but it doesn't seem that completely unrealistic in all that happens in just a few short weeks if that long.  One of things that I always find frustrating with novellas that take place over a short time is that things seem to happen so unbelievably fast, but not with the novella for the set up was just perfect, and everything is explained to where it all makes it believable.  What helps with this is the history that is explained between Susannah and Toby.

Forgiveness is something that is not always easy to give even when one thinks they have given it, then once it is freely given things change for the better.  This novella is a great example how sometimes we think we have forgiven someone who hurt us without any warning or explanation , yet in reality we haven't, and how when we do finally forgive how much better things become then.

“A Plain Holiday” by Patricia Davids is another wonderful installment of her 'Brides of Amish Country' though it is a completely stand alone story. Sally's story has been told in another one of her books, though I can't remember exactly which one, but we learn so much more in this short story and really if anyone is reading this for the first time they don't feel as if they are missing something.

Sally is struggling and so for now she is working as a nanny for an English family. She has a lot of things to figure out before she makes any final decisions and then things get a bit out of her control. Sally has learned a few things over the course of her time as a nanny, though her Amish roots are still a big part of her.  The things she learned though are things that frankly she has to finally make up her mind as to what she is going to do for the rest of her life.

During the Christmas holidays, things go from bad to worse but even more lessons are learned as well.  The truth also comes out during this story over a few different things from the past, and that truth is freeing in some cases that is for sure. Ben even has some things to learn as well. It was amazing to see how everything happened in this short time period but at the same time it doesn't seem like it was all that unbelievable or all that short.

These short novellas are perfect for those who only a little bit of time to read if they don't want to get involved in a too deep of a book in that limited time frame they might have. I found that these novella's were the perfect length to read when it was too late to read any other book before bed, and yet I didn't feel as if I was missing something. There was just enough detail to make the stories to make them feel as if they were full of detail without feeling as if anything was being left out.

I so enjoyed how both of the stories stayed true to Christmas and the values that are so important to Christmas. That this is indeed a very important holiday where it is the birth of Christ, the light of the world and Prince of Peace. Things that so many times those meanings get lost in the world of toy commercials, latest electronic device and so on, which is one of the reason's I love reading Christmas stories set either in the past or with the Amish for those values are important to the stories.

I wish all who read this book find the Christmas spirit with the reading of these novellas and enjoy the book as I did.

"Emma Blooms at Last" by Naomi King

About This Book

Romance is in the air during the fall wedding season in the Amish community of Cedar Creek. But while one loving couple prepares to tie the knot, Amanda and Wyman Brubaker’s large family faces a threat from outside their happy circle...and must learn to pull together.

Recently wed Amanda and Wyman Brubaker are thrilled that their children from previous marriages have blended together to form a strong family. But when the construction of Wyman’s new grain elevator is delayed, making the project more expensive than anticipated, Amanda’s determination to rally the kids into taking on work to improve the family’s finances comes into conflict with Wyman’s sense of responsibility as head of the household....

Meanwhile, as James Graber and Abby Lambright prepare for their long-awaited nuptials, folks gather from far and wide. Amanda’s nephew Jerome has long been smitten with James’s sister Emma and wants to seize this chance to woo her. But Emma’s been burned once and is twice shy of trusting the fun-loving, never-serious Jerome. As Emma and Jerome struggle to understand each other, and find the courage to make a leap of faith, the Brubakers face a bigger challenge than they first anticipated and begin to discover just what it means to fight...the Amish way.

My Review

“Emma Bloom at Last” by Naomi King is the last book in her 'Home at Cedar Creek' and 'One Big Happy Family' series (or what I call the 'Need a Flow Chart' series). All the answers have been wrapped up from all the books, in this book and what a truly wonderful book that was so well worth the wait.

This book has three different story-lines going on with the wrap up finally of the one story-line that has been there throughout all of the books, and what a wrap up it was, for I didn't feel like I was being cheated out of something for how long I (which was pretty hard for I hate waiting), had to wait for all that happened in this book. Then the story of Amanda and her new family from “Amanda Weds a Good Man” plays a good part of the story highlighting their lives after all that happened in the other book. I was thrilled that Emma finally came out like she did for she is a character that honestly touched my heart throughout each and every book.

This book has plenty of joyous moments, heartbreaking moments, and everything in between.  I found myself laughing and crying, sighing and rolling my eyes, and putting the book down because I just wanted to smack someone in the book. When a book or a series (yes the whole series was like this) is written to where I feel like I was part of the book, then there is just something really special about the author to where I just can't wait to read more of the author's books in the future.

Seeing so many old characters and how their lives are changing and moving forward was as if I came back to visit a place that feels like home. To see that this was good-bye to all of these fictional friends was a bit sad, yet this was a very happy ending to the whole series.  I didn't feel as if anything was left hanging to where I need to know what happens to this character or another, which happens so infrequently that this was pretty refreshing, even though it was good-bye to some very beloved characters.

Moving forward was the message I took from this book with all that happened, where a person might want to hide away from the world, instead moving forward. I didn't get the feeling that the forward movement was done in a way that pushed any character out of their comfort zone in a way that seemed pushy or overbearing. Though there is some pushing it is done in such a way that it is done out of love and concern, while not being overbearing, which resulted in some positive results, without any frustrations from the one or ones being pushed.

I hated seeing the book end for I will miss (at least until I revisit the Lambright, Graber and Brubaker families again) each and every character for with each book, each of the main characters (Abby, James, Emma, James and Emma's parents, Amanda and Wyman) seemed to grow a little deeper with each book. There wasn't a moment when I thought that any of the characters felt flat or as if they were missing anything, but yet with each book, there is something new to learn about this wonderful characters.  I will end up rereading this series numerous times in the years ahead I am sure without a doubt.

There are not many authors who have been able to hold my attention over the years, desperately waiting for each and every new book to see what happens next, but Ms. King kept me waiting on pins and needles. Every since I first read “Abby Finds Her Calling” I have made sure that three months prior to each new book, my name went on the library waiting list so that I could be one of the first person to get my greedy hands on the book. I will be looking for more books by Ms. King/Hubbard in the future for her writing is so interesting.

I hope all who read this series enjoys it as much as I have and with this book finds it hard to say good-bye as well.

"Amanda Weds a Good Man" by Naomi King

About This Book

The Amish community of Cedar Creek is celebrating a wedding! When Amanda Lambright, widowed with three daughters, marries Wyman Brubaker, a widower with five children, she envisions joining their two households into one big happy family. But it isn’t quite that easy....
Amanda Lambright loves Wyman Brubaker, and after four years as a single mother, she is grateful for his support and for this new chance at happiness as his wife. She’s confident that their children will get along just fine. But once Amanda’s clan moves into Wyman’s home, the tight quarters and Wyman’s reluctance to make changes to accommodate Amanda cause friction. The older kids are squabbling. The little ones are frequently in tears. Tiny Alice Ann isn’t speaking at all. Amanda and Wyman can’t find any privacy. And Amanda wonders if she’ll ever have a chance to pursue the pottery making that means so much to her.

Amanda believes that family lies at the center of any well-lived Amish life. Can she find the wisdom to guide the reluctant members of her new extended family toward the love that will bind them together?

My Review

“Amanda Weds a Good Man” by Naomi King is the first book in her 'One Big Family' and is still tightly connected with her 'Home to Cedar Creek' series, and the third book in my 'Need a Flow Chart' series. This does take a different route with an extension of the Lambright family, but all of the characters from the 'Home to Cedar Creek' series are here in this book with that same story-line that is weaved through the other books.

This is a wonderful book that has a Brady Brunch feel to it with an Amish twist. The blending of two families into one very large family has its up and downs, highs and lows, joy and sorrow, and this story is perfect for showing it.  I thought that this was a wonderful story that shows all those problems that any blended family might experience.  Comprises were made, even when things seem to go against the grain at time.

This is a wonderful different twist on following God's plan as well, for though Amanda and Wyman thought they were doing what they thought was the best for the whole new family, yet things are going haywire until something drastic happens to change their paths.  At times I could see any English couple walking away for things did go extremely rough at times, but within the Amish there is no just throwing the hands up and walking away, for they had to work things out.  Rough patches are there as always but working things out make things so much better.

I love how characters from the other series play a pretty big part of this book as they have in the other books. My heart broke numerous times throughout this book for there were times when things just seemed to be going all the wrong ways.  Then my heart was rejoicing when good things happened.

This is an amazing story that is for sure and I hope all who read it, enjoy it as much as I have this two times I have read it.

"Rosemary Opens Her Heart" by Naomi King

About This Book

Another spring reminds the Amish of Cedar Creek, Missouri, that for everything there is a season.

Zanna Lambright is finally marrying Jonny Ropp, and friends and family have come from far and wide to celebrate. Among them is young widow Rosemary Yutzy, mother of toddler Katie, whose husband was tragically killed last fall. With a willing heart Rosemary has taken over care of her in-law’s family and continued to run a baked goods business from home, but privately she still mourns her lost Joe...and is unprepared for the changes that are coming...

Rosemary’s father-in-law wants to merge his lamb-raising business with Matt Lambright’s—a move that will require the Yutzys to relocate from their nearby town to Cedar Creek. Moreover, it will bring Rosemary into constant contact with Matt, who is making no secret of his romantic interest in her. The challenges of contemplating a future unlike any she expected are overwhelming for Rosemary. And although Matt is strong and kind, his courtship is so persistent, she often wants to run the other way. As Rosemary struggles to see beyond her immediate joys and sorrows, will she embrace the outpouring of welcome and support from the people of Cedar Creek...and accept this new chance to open her heart to a more abundant life?

My Review

“Rosemary Opens Her Heart” by Naomi King is the second book in her series 'Home at Cedar Creek' and 'One Big Happy Family', or as I call it 'Need a Flow Chart' series. Yes the 'Home at Cedar Creek' and 'One Big Happy Family' titles sounds like it is actually two different series, but in reality it is the same series, with the same characters and a familiar yet frustrating story-line weaving through it. However, no matter how frustrated I might get with things happening or not happening with how I think they should be going, this is a wonderful series. This is my third time rereading this book as I prepare to read the final book “Emma Blooms at Last”.

There is something special about this series for no matter how many times I read a book in the series, I am finding something a little different about what I take from the book. I loved how changes were dealt with the story from changes in location, in a family, in the heart, and in life, for we can handle the changes with either a positive or negative outlook, it just all depends on we look at the changes. Sometimes we need to step back and look at the changes with a fresh eyes or at the least the willingness to look at the changes how they might be for the better.

Love is most certainly in the air with this book as a few new characters are introduced in the same loving detail as the first book. Emotions are not so much of a roller coaster as mine went on with the first book, but frankly I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time. Between both story-lines that are taking place in this story, I couldn't stop for I needed to see the forward movement in both of the story-lines even if one of them is moving far to slowly for me, though I was thrilled with the first kiss that is for sure. Both story-lines were just perfect for the movement in each was perfect for each of the characters that were involved, even if personally I wanted to see some more movement in one of them.

It is so hard to talk about this book and series without giving away a lot of details which is why I am not writing my normal reviews talking about all the different major characters, what I liked about each of them and so on, but my review for “Emma Blooms at Last” I might just go over all the books and my thoughts about everyone. I just would hate to be the reason someone decides not to read the series all because I gave away something that is so important in the book, and I think almost everything that happens in each of the book is important to the next book or to the story-line.

I hope all who read this book and series enjoys it all as much as I have.

My Review

“Abby Finds Her Calling” by Naomi King is the first book in her series 'Home at Cedar Creek' that is connected with her 'One Big Happy Family'. Yes they are two different series titles, but really they are all a part of the same series, which I have lovingly termed 'Need a Flow Chart' series. This is the fourth time I have read this book, because I need to refresh my memory in order to read “Emma Blooms at Last” which has been recently released and is the fourth and final book in the series. I have reread this book each time a new book in the series has come out and each time I discover something new as for the message.

I may joke about needing a flow chart to follow along through the different books, I am also not that far off. I can remember the first time that I read this book, I was so completely frustrated with how the book ended for I didn't think it was fair or very nice to the reader. I still don't think this book is very fair or nice to the reader, but man oh man it is a fantastic book and series. This book could be a stand alone if anyone could walk away from the one story line that is left unsatisfactory, but then again if that story line is not leaving the reader hanging really for there is an ending to it, in regards to this book.

As I hinted at there is almost two story lines going through this book, or maybe three if you want to look at the other family who has some secrets that are revealed, but wow what messages the stories have. Some of the messages that I gathered from before and now are, forgiveness, tenderness, determination can be a good thing when everyone thinks you are making a mistake, growing up, forgiving and forgetting is not always easy but worth it, anger is normal but shouldn't be allowed to fester, and that life is not always fair but you will only find joy in life if you look for it in everything. Oh yeah I got a lot of messages and they mean just as much this fourth time reading the book as it did the first time around.

There are three main characters that is for sure in this book, Abby, Zanna and James, and what a tangle web is woven through this story and to watch it get even more tangled before it is unraveled was an amazing journey. Even though I have read this book so many times I have to be honest that my emotions were all over the place with empathy, anger, frustration, joy, heartbreak and complete understanding. I wish I could explain why I felt each emotion but if I do then I am going to be ruining this book to someone who hasn't had the pleasure of reading this book yet.

There are numerous characters that are introduced in this book, all who have some pretty big parts to play later in different books, and at this point the readers are given pretty good ideas about each of them, and who they are on the inside. We, as readers, also are felt as if we are invited into everyone's lives through the good and the bad, through all that they are going through and are written in such a way that it is hard to remember that these people are simply fictional characters for they seem to reach out and touch people in a way that real life people do.

I truly hope that everyone who reads this book, enjoys it as much as I have each and every time I have read it.
